Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real fiasco. We read more tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a spoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so awful that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer magnitude of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a case of terrible hair. I couldn't figure it to look right. As I was getting ready out the door, I stumbled and spilled all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for a very important appointment.

By the time I reached my destination, I was exhausted. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
